An Aperture to Creativity...
Have been wanting to pursue some form of art for a long time now… always believed that I have some amount of imaginative substance, some amount of creative aptitude, some amount of appreciation for art… these would come out in spurts in small things that I keep cultivating as hobbies… one of them being photography… all I have done so far is point and shoot, and the pictures look fine, they do capture what I see with my eyes and what I want to freeze in the form of a photograph… hence I got myself to believe that I can explore photography as an art…
When I came across Bangalore Photography Workshops and their credentials, I enrolled for a one day workshop with them.. what was fascinating was that it was an outdoor workshop, with hands-on training on using the camera… So reached the venue, equipped with my DSLR, hoping to capture some picturesque views of Hebbal lake and the scenic surrounding, under the guidance of the tutors… what I came back with was some blurred and washed out pictures initially and a few decent ones later… but what this workshop helped me achieve is, understand the basic technical aspects of photography like the internal structure of camera, the ISO, the White Balance, the Aperture, the Shutter and their speeds, how to control these, manipulate these etc etc… at the end of it, do I capture better pictures today? I don’t think so.. the ones in ‘Auto mode’ were still far better (the camera in its ‘auto mode’ is anytime more intelligent than me or my knowledge from one day workshop)… will it always remain this way? Well, only practice will take me somewhere near to that level of intelligence, if not perfection…
But more important than practice is ‘passion’… only passion for photography will drive me to practise it… do I have the passion? I am not sure… there is a huge difference between a hobby and a passion… and while hobby may be cultivated, passion cannot be… some people attending the workshop were much younger, some just in Class 7th or 8th… when asked why we were at the workshop, all I could think of is ‘learn to take better pictures’ (I might have added a few more irrelevant lines then, but essence is just that).. and then I heard the others talk about photography as their passion, some role models who influence them, career choices like ‘travel photography’ and so on… they knew all types and makes of cameras and lenses, techniques and tricks… they had clearly done their homework, were completely focused on the art and here I was, grappling with what hobby to cultivate and how !!
Having said that, this workshop was a fascinating experience, enlightening me to the technique of photography, to the method to madness, to the science in this art… it has given an ‘aperture’ for my imaginative substance, for my creativity… its upon me to open the ‘shutter’ wide and let the creativity flow… and let the imagination freeze into breathtaking pictures and photographs…
