Language of 160 characters...
I’m so appy 2 c u 2de, its bin so long dat v met.. veh hv u bin ol dis dez? Misd u so much dat u cant magin… dun go away newher pls… m nuthin widot u…
How intimate and heartfelt this conversation is meant to be… but on reading it in the above form, it appears so lifeless, and ofcourse difficult to comprehend too… this is what the limitation of 160 characters has done I suppose… played havoc with the emotions… made conversations limp and insensitive…
I do understand that one can use shortforms to save space and money, to be brief and quick.. but at the cost of ineffective dialogues? Not done… Well, am still ok with conjunctions and adverbs being shortened… say what = vot, and = n, the = d… they don’t really take away the essence of the matter but imagine someone wants to say ‘thank you’ and says ‘thnks’ or worse still ‘tx’… Same is the fate of Welcome when it is shortened to ‘wc’… far from expressing gratitude, it sounds like ‘good to have got rid of you’… tich !
A very chirpy greeting it is meant to be ‘Good Morning’… and when your day begins with ‘GM’ from someone instead, feels like replying “splash some water on your face you lazy bum and ofcourse, a very good morning to you”… though these abbreviations were invented on the sms platform, the usage now seems to be universal, be it smss, emails or chats… I only hope that all of us rise up to respect the language… and that the soul of the conversations, the fundamental substance of the conversations, the very words and expressions are not lost in bargain to save some time and money…
