You @ 5: A Creative Cutlet...

My dear Niky,

Here comes my letter-of-the-year to you on your birthday, just that today it actually feels like a letter being written and sent… because today I am oceans away from you….

It is your fifth birthday today but your first one without me… infact this is the first time we are away for such a long time… I have been preparing you for this over last 2 months.... to accept the fact that I will be away and will miss your birthday too, which also meant that we will not host a birthday party for your friends, that you have been looking forward to all through the year, after attending birthday parties of your friends… but my girl, you showed no signs of disappointment… infact the fact that Aaji Aaba will come over in my absence elated you to no extent… all you told me was ‘Mamma aap jaao, bas Kaira baby ko le aana’…

Kaira is a new addition to our family this year, your youngest sister, and I am with Ankoo Bua in the US to welcome Kaira and unfold her into our beautiful world… I don’t think I can get Kaira back home with me, but Ankoo Bua has promised she will get her to you very soon… I have seen how fascinated you are to play with tiny kids as if they are your dolls… all your dolls today are named Anaya, only little baby you have played with so far… now you will have another name for your dolls...

While you like playing with your toys in free time, your most favourite pastime is doing jigsaws… Nithila and you manage to do a 1000 pieces jigsaw together… the centre table in our drawing area is full of these puzzles – a couple of completed ones and one always in progress… besides these, you also do lots of drawings, craft activities with Nithila’s help.. infact you take her help (even if you don't need) in everything that you do… many a times she does get bugged but most of the times she manages to oblige ..... specially the story sessions you both have where she reads out these story books to you and you intently listen to them is quite gladdening… you do try to read the story books on your own, but when you cannot go beyond a few words, you come to me all depressed and crying, asking me why you cannot read… its just a matter of couple of years more sweetheart and am sure you will eat away books like Nithila does…

More and more things that you both do together, more are the fights too… here it is important for me to mention and for you to know that you pick up most of the fights with her and its always you who gets away with whatever you want… Actually you make your asks very clear every single time, whether it is about gifts on your birthday, or gifts to be given to your friends, places to go out for dinner, activities that you want/don’t want to do, your bedsheet and bedcover, clothes you wear everyday, clothes I wear too, whether we can or cannot scold you, whether you want to give a hug to Papa and me, how many hugs I can give Nithila in a day, which side of me will you stand for a selfie, how many kisses I am allowed to plant on you… you have opinion on everything… and a strong one too… you also decided your birthday plan yourself this year ..... And you wanted to go to Claytopia, your all time favorite activity center, to make some mementos and eat the French fries there… your this plan also will be executed to your liking… you decide and demand, we all have to oblige, else we get to see your annoyed little face, digged into your tiny folded arms… but the fact also is that it is extremely gratifying to fulfill your demands and wishes and see that gorgeous smile on you… the vivacious smile that enlivens our lives… how I missed
it when the fairy I sent from here reached you today morning, when you got all the gifts that I sent with her, when your excitement multiplied and smile widened as you opened the gifts one after the other…

Another important milestone this year was that you have gotten over your travel sickness to a large extent… now travelling with Nithila and you is such fun, specially the long drives with Papa driving, you both sitting behind enjoying the motion and music… and me being the navigator, food stocker, music player and sundry… we did some awesome roadtrips this year… we went to Pondicherry where you spent lot of time on the sand finding sea shells… you have preserved them till date… we also drove to Ooty along with Polo for a dog show where you had fun showing off Polo and playing with other dogs too… then we drove to Hyderabad to celebrate the new year eve with our friends and visited a few great historic places too... Besides we toured some interesting parts of Sri Lanka during Diwali holidays with our family friends… we went to Yala wildlife known for having one of the largest leopard population and then to a sea-side town of Hikkaduwa… During your summer vacations, we went to Allahabad to spend time with Daadi, Babaji and all our family there…

This year your activities have increased considerably… you learned little bit of swimming during the summer vacations… while you are very fond of water, you were terribly scared to swim… your shrieking during your swimming lessons would get the whole of condo out in their balconies… after a good one hour of determined effort from your coach and an equal amount of resistance from you, much to the respite of everyone, the lessons would end by letting you play in the kids pool on your own… you learned to cycle also this year and that you picked up in a flash almost… you like cycling around the condo everyday, also because of the fact that it helps you earn your iPad time… the number of rounds you do everyday, gets you those many minutes of uninterrupted iPad time over the weekend… and what you do on iPad is also amazing… you search for videos on clay modelling and keep watching them to no end one after the other with eyes wide in amazement… these days, the learning time on iPad has got diluted by Peppa Pig and I am struggling to find ways of getting you off that stupid cartoon and restore your creative spirits…

The other day when I met your school teacher during the PTM, she was all praises about your performance in school.. that you are far ahead of your classmates in writing, reading, story telling, concepts etc… but the best feedback was that you are the most creative child in the class… whether its lego or clay or even a piece of paper, you always come up with something innovative and creative with it on your own… I conceded with her, for I know that when you put your imagination to work, you are capable of producing the most extraordinary output… you see something and your creativity brings it to life in some shape and form… everytime I return from my work trips, I find a card specially made for me, either at the doormat or on the shoerack or on my cupboard or by my bedside or even below my sleeping pillow… these cards overflow with your imagination, but more than that are expressions of your thoughtfulness, your charm, and your love… these expressions adorn my days with boundless love, your gentleness I feel through countless hugs and your radiance I sense in the endless kisses… you are my quiet strength, helping me make this life worthwhile, for me and for you too…

I love you and I am missing you a lot… waiting to get back to you soon… Have a blessed life and a great 5th birthday…

Love Mumma
