Colors of the free-spirited...

Every year, when I see scores of people playing Holi, I think to myself – only the free-spirited can play with colors and drown in them… My girls didn’t get an opportunity to be part of these spirited Holi celebrations this year, so they decided to put the holiday to a better use and clean up their book shelf. They know how to ‘gamify’ every activity they do, so here they decided to set up a book shop, arranging all of their collection in an attractive display.. I saw them at their game from a distance and suddenly realized the array of colors on display…

The book covers by themselves made for a bright and vibrant spectacle… and I wondered what assortment of colors will we get if we let the stories stream their hues… the jungles in Ruskin Bond books are not just green and brown, but also show the ivory white, and the foggy grey… the Dork Diaries and BFFs in them, flaunt their fushcia pinks and daffodil yellows… the thrills and adventures in David Williams’ books talk of midnight black and mahogany red… so when my girls use phrases like “when the sun sets, it becomes tangerine” (meaning bright orange)… or “her bubblegum cheeks” (meaning pink cheeks)… also “the cake should turn brunette” (meaning dark brown), I know the source of their palette-able language…

The stories narrated may be real or fictitious, but the emotions feel all genuine, with the rhythmic glowing and fading of words, the expressions rising like the golden sunrise and falling with the greying shadows… In these colors, their moods swing happily many times, their hearts cringe gloomily sometimes, and they are transported into a world of infinite emotions and shades…
Seeing these two angels playing with a variety of books, I continued to think to myself – it is infact this drowning in the variety of colors that makes them free-spirited !
